“Practically starting from scratch: an awakening, a man standing on his saddle to bang on the shutters, our names shouted in a certain dawn, a message, a summons... A new record for pitch and toss. We have not been picked out simply to be abandoned set loose to find our own way... We are entitled to some direction... I would have thought.”
Ros and Guil stumble through Hamlet’s story without having the faintest idea of what sort of story they’re a part of. They have no impact on the plot – the plot, however, has great influence on them. The critical decisions all happen either above their heads or in the depths of the subconscious. They are mere pawns in the hands of powers whose real motivation they can only guess at. But then, isn’t 98 per cent of humanity?
