The time is out of joint. A story of coming of age. A balanced, rich family. The father rules with a strong hand, the mother is beautiful, the son clever and healthy. The father dies, the mother remarries, the son cannot go back to school. Hamlet is a conservative youngster, believes in the unity of the family, the truth of words, friendship, love and God. He does not know how it feels to be a loser, does not know bitterness, hopelessness, nor does he know responsibility which goes with independence. Coming of age is the moment when we realise how vulnerable, weak and tragically lonesome we are. When we face the world, we despair seeing that the rules of juvenile novels don’t work in the adult world. Something snaps in us. People suddenly seem pathetically petty cowards and liars. The moment we accept that as a fact is what we call socialisation. When we fight against it, we are being antisocial, anarchic or infantile. Is there another fate imaginable for this youth? No. For that question makes no sense. So what is the lesson we learn? That there is no lesson to learn. Life is hard. (Árpád Schilling)
