“I declare at my own risk that I don’t want to leave our old apartment! I declare at my own risk that I don’t want to sleep here! I declare at my own risk that now I have to grab life by its throat and conquer! I want my skin to be white! I don’t wanna be a Gypsy my whole life God, please, make me ROMANIAN!”
I Declare at My Own Risk is a solo-performance written and performed by Alina Serban, based on her own personal history. A show about a Roma adolescent growing up in a Bucharest ghetto, divided between the Roma community in which she feels she doesn’t belong and the Romanian majority that doesn’t accept her.
